John’s 10-Year Reflection

Reflecting on ten years of Hero Kids Foundation, I can feel the weight of each memory—those early, fierce discussions and the genuine support that has carried us through. I still remember not wanting to be called “founder”; I wanted every person beside me to be acknowledged as part of the founding crew. I recall those long talks with Shane, Mark, Ann, Jenna, and others who shaped HKF with their insights, patience, and shared vision, even as my ideas evolved.

From the start, Hero Kids Foundation was about “One Team, One Fight”—a core principle that permeates our community and is ingrained in the fabric of HKF. It took time to accept the “founder” title, which I saw as my “The Chief” role again. Building and leading a team that genuinely embodied our mission became my driving purpose. Being the “dumbest guy in the room” has been a gift, teaching me to listen more than I speak and allowing me to foster deep collaborations and partnerships that have propelled us forward.

This milestone has arrived almost unexpectedly; ten years have flown by in a blur of perseverance and growth. Shane and Eliot have reminded me to lift my head and truly look at what we have built together. My journey with Hero Kids Foundation was, at first, a penance to my former spouse and daughters, who served at home while I was in uniform. They stood in my shadow, often unrecognized, which is why HKF’s motto is “Giving Light to Those Who Serve at Home.” This year, my daughters reminded me that my penance had long since been fulfilled. They encouraged me to see the impact we have made, helping me shift from feeling indebted to celebrating the success we’ve achieved together.

HKF’s success is rooted in the people who have walked this path alongside me. Tiffanie, our Executive Assistant, turned my chaotic stack of receipts into streamlined QuickBooks files. Our Nature Center Manager, Isaac, keeps our herd healthy and happy, building relationships that strengthen our nature-based mission. Lauren, our Social Media Manager, helps me connect with a world I once found foreign. And Eliot, who took on the role of Executive Director with an open heart and passion, brings balance and a sense of camaraderie, grounding our work with fresh energy.

Thank you to our board of governance—past and present members—who believed in me through every challenge. Eric, Chris, John, Barb, Kim, Lauren, Gerard, Ric, Shane, and all who supported our mission over my missteps have kept us on course. As we look to “Seed the Passion” in 2025, your dedication has set the stage for a flourishing future.

As I close this chapter of our first decade, I can only look forward with gratitude and excitement to where the next decade will take us. Thank you to all who have supported Hero Kids Foundation—your dedication is the light that keeps us moving forward. Here’s to another ten years of giving light to those who serve at home.
